Tilly Schalkwyk - RN, MSN, CNS

Tilly SchalkwykTilly is retired after 40 years of nursing - the last 25 years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (MSN, UBC, ’88) in gerontology in Providence Health Care Elder Care Program - Residential Care. Tilly worked with practicing nurses and interdisciplinary team members to develop practice guidelines, competencies, and quality practices that won them recognition for excellence. Two of Tilly’s long term interests—how chronic illness is experienced and how palliative care can be delivered in residential care—led to a two year demonstration project applying the palliative approach in residential care. Understanding how individual clinicians and teams become expert care providers was key to supporting this translation of knowledge sustainably. Through short daily huddles we worked toward building habits of practice in a supportive practice environment so clinicians could build and own their growing expertise in using the palliative approach both individually and as teams. Tilly currently mentors a PHC research challenge group investigating how family decision makers experience health care decision making for an elder with advanced dementia.
